RCR publishes updated training recommendations for doctors on ultrasound scanning

The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has released updated training recommendations for doctors wanting to utilise ultrasound scanning as part of their clinical examinations.

The previous iteration of “Ultrasound training recommendations for medical and surgical specialities” was released in 2014, in response to a growing demand for ultrasound provision outside of imaging departments, and to ensure medical non-radiologists were properly trained and using quality equipment.    

The recommendations detail the knowledge base and practical competencies needed for clinicians using ultrasound across a range of specialities, including urology and gynaecology, gastrointestinal, vascular, musculoskeletal, focused emergency medicine and cranial ultrasound in infants.

The new training document incorporates ongoing best practice and also includes a new section on head and neck ultrasound.
