Vascular Society Council Statement on Consultant Industrial Action in England

The Vascular Society Council would like to offer our support to consultant colleagues who have decided to take part in the industrial action on the 20th & 21st July 2023. During the two days of industrial action consultants will provide ‘Christmas Day’ levels of patient care.

This unprecedented decision by consultants to strike has been difficult and very personal for individuals. We understand that colleagues have been driven to consider action because they are frustrated by the daily struggle to provide the high standards of care they wish for patients. Poor staffing levels mean they are constantly propping up an underfunded and rundown National Health Service. Highly skilled and experienced colleagues are leaving our NHS to retire early or taking their skills abroad because of the offers of better pay and working conditions.

For the future of our NHS, and our profession, we urge the Department of Health and the British Medical Association to quickly find an equitable resolution through negotiation to put an end to this dispute.
